New diagnosis - daughter diagnosed with a low grade glioma astrocytoma

Hi, my story is slightly different from what I’ve seen so far, but my daughter got diagnosed with a low grade glioma astrocytoma 5 weeks ago, the tumour was removed from my daughters brain and we are still awaiting molecular test results to come in,  referred to macmillan as a result of this as if the results come back as ‘ changing cells ‘ my daughter could have to go through chemotherapy, I know she hasn’t had a diagnosis of cancer in itself but I’m struggling to process the whole ‘ chemotherapy ‘ situation as that would be the next option if these results prove residual disease as suspected.. Just rooting for some advice and guidance on coping mechanisms on the worry and stress this is causing me as a mother,

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am so sorry to hear about what you are going through with your daughter and her diagnosis of astrocytoma. I cannot imagine how hard this is to cope with.

I would encourage you to seek support from the specialist nurses allocated to your daughter at the hospital, as they will be aware of local support services. But we can tell you about support organisations that are out there for you to access.

This children's cancer charity is a good resource, Macmillan also has a wealth of support.

If you post on our 'living with' cancer section of our forum, you may hear from others in a similar situation, and if you have other children then this link might be helpful.

Take care and if you need more information you may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
