Life expectancy: my wife has stage 4 lung cancer, she’s 41.

My Wife has stage 4 lung cancer, she’s 41.

her consultant says”we can give her sometime “. What does that mean.

when I asked him that he said”I don’t have a crystal ball “.

we have a 12 year old son.

is it possible she lives with me for 30 or 40 years? Or are we looking at 1 to 5 years?

I don’t expect a calendar but it’s really difficult to know what to expect.

  • Hello John3450 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I can understand what a huge impact this must be having on your family.

Prognosis (how long some one has got) is a difficult thing to predict and one that most doctors are reluctant to specify. They usually can give general predictions but it is difficult to be too precise as sometimes some one may live longer then expected and in other cases a patient may live for a shorter amount of time.

A lot will depend on how a patient is responding to treatment and if they continue to respond or whether they grow resistant to the drugs. It is difficult to see in to the future as to what will happen or whether there will be other drugs or clinical trials that your wife will be able to join.

We have some general predictions on our website about survival but this is very general so try not to read too much in to it.

It is important to live each day and not look too far in to the future which I know is a difficult thing to do.

Do see how she goes with her treatment and it may be further down the line that the doctors will be able to tell you more.

If you would like to talk things through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
