Scared of colonoscopy prep

Hi all.

I am very emetophobic and have to have a colonoscopy due to a positive fit test.

The procedure itself doesn't bother me at all, but the prep does. I'm terrified of the side effects and think I might have to cancel.

  • When are you due the colonoscopy? I wonder if you have time to contact your provider if they could give you a gentler preparation. I'd definitely be telling them about my concerns before cancelling. You won't be the first person they've met with this kind of phobia

I think if you can contact them on Monday there's just enough time to get advice and come up with suitable arrangements. My colonoscopy was done through the NHS at a private provider and they were pretty good with accomodating me.

  • Hi There czj and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are needing to have a colonoscopy and appreciate how you are worried about the bowel prep and the side effects it may cause you.

As others have already commented here, do speak with the endoscopy department about your worries as they may be able to put your mind at ease, or suggest a different preparation that may be kinder on the tummy.

It sounds like it is important for you to have the procedure so your bowel can be closely inspected to check out where the bleeding may be coming from. So try if you can to focus on this rather than the bowel prep causing sickness, which it it doesn't for everyone.

Speak with the hospital when you can but please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Wishing you all the best

    Naomi
