PSA reading

My husband has been treated for locally advanced prostate cancer with radiotherapy and hormone treatment.  His hormone treatment stopped  and his levels have decreased. However, the latest reading has risen from 2.3 to 3.6 in the last three months and now he's very concerned that this means the cancer has returned. I, of course, can't reassure him. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you.

  • Hello Magslady and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your husband's situation.

Unfortunately no one here can say what is or isn't going on with your husband in terms of his psa reading or cancer. Sometimes the psa can slightly increase before stabilising again after hormone treatment has finished ,but your husband's doctors will be monitoring his situation, I'm sure.

Do encourage your husband to speak with his team about his results and concerns. Quite often the doctor will ask to repeat the psa blood test again to check for further rises before deciding what may need to happen next.

We have a section of information treatment if your prostate cancer comes back on our website that may be helpful to read.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Wishing you both all the best

    Naomi
