Worried

Think I may have lung cancer, had ct scan that showed up something ,pain in shoulder booked in for a mri and pet scan.

Worried about telling family, don't want to upset them before Xmas is over.

What do I do ? Wait to see what it is first or tell them now ?

  • It's always a dilemma - I decided to take my family along with me, I told them what I knew as I found it out - that way when we got to the eventual diagnosis we were almost ready for it.  Something along the lines of prepare for the worst, but hope for the best!

There were some colleagues who didn't know what had been going on, so they just got the sudden cold shock of 'I have lung cancer' - and I think that was almost harder for me than the conversations with my family.

But you know you and your people best - their support through your journey could be important for you.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry you are going through all this uncertainty right now. This must be a difficult time for you.

It really comes down to personal choice about whether you should tell your family what you are currently going through. Some people will prefer to wait until they have more information about their condition before they share it with family whereas others may prefer to tell their families straightaway that they are having tests and investigations.

I appreciate living with uncertainty is understandably unsettling and I really hope you have some more answers soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
