Urgent referral to the breast clinic

I went to the GP on Wednesday. I'd had some mild pain and discomfort in my left breast for a few days, going up to just below the armpit. On further invesitgation I noticed that when I lifted my arm the skin pulled in, like a crease, in a line that followed where the tenderness was. Thankfully the GP was quick to see me and agreed it was concerning as I have no headache, temp etc that would signify infection. I was told that I would be referred urgently to the breast clinic at the local hospital.

It's only now that I've started to process things that I've realised I didnt think to ask any questions. Can you give me any advice about what to expect at the appointment, is it best to take someone with you or not necessary at this stage?

I havent had the referral letter or appointment yet so probably jumping the gun a bit.

Thanks

Emma

  • Hello Emma, and thank you for posting.

I'm sorry you have these concerns about breast changes, but it is good it has been reviewed by eh doctor and you will be seen at the breast clinic for a full review. As the information says you will have a physical examination and either a mammogram or ultrasound scan depending on your age and breast size. They may also do a biopsy to send off cells to be looked at for further examination under a microscope.

Some people do take someone with them, but it isn't always necessary. Everyone feels different about these sorts of appointments. Do what you feel most comfortable with.

Take care Emma and hopefully your appointment will come through soon.  Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
