Pain 5 month after radiotherapy for breast cancer

Hi , I finished radiotherapy for breast cancer lumpectomy & sentinel node biopsy in my right breast in June . I have had the sore breast , the dull aches  & the sharp pains during this time but all very manageable. But over the last 3/4 weeks the pain has been getting worse . Some days not so bad but then other days it feels like a flare up & very painful , but has been gradually getting worse over the last few weeks . This  last weekend I had a really bad time , to the point I was in tears . From the chest wall right across the breast , across the side of my ribs into my back & into the front of my shoulder . I can only describe the pain to when you’ve pulled a muscle in your back & it’s agony to move.
I was due my 6/7 month check up with my consultant yesterday so I mentioned it to him after he checked me over . He didn’t seem interested at all . He said it was because of radiotherapy and it would get better . I told him how painful it was & it had only been the last 3/4 weeks but felt it was getting worse not better . I told him I could feel ridges under my breast & he said it was where my bra was digging in , I had to insist that my bra was digging In on that side because the breast felt swollen on that side but the ridges were there even without a bra . He looked and said he could see 2 areas of cording that would go away on their own .
Is this amount of pain normal 5 month after radiotherapy when it wasn’t like this originally ?  I felt he was dismissing me & only interested that he had removed the tumor and the wound was healing .

  • My wife will be coming up for 3 years out from treatment, and she just recently got checked out too because of pain. This is her 2nd time in 3 years being checked during a flare up of pain. If you've been checked over and seen your treating doctors, it should be fine. How we had it explained to us, radiation takes no prisoners, on the area that was targetted. Your tissue gets damaged, any nerves in the way get damaged, your muscle gets damaged, the bone (your ribs usually get damaged) and it can cause damage in the lung too.  It's why they try to get you to hold your breath as to move your heart outta the way.

As you are now finding out, not everyone's pain subsides like some doctors and articles state. Some people take years to heal, some get some sort of irritation for life.

I'm no expert, i just know what my wife has went through and these flare-ups can be a thing even years after the event. You absolutely did the right thing getting checked, and if it subsides and comes back again, get it checked out again. Sorry you're having this pain because i have seen the pain my wife has endured when these flare ups happen. They can be unpleasant.

  • I fully support ProfBaw's explanation. I too am suffering from similar flare ups after lumpectomy, axillary clearance and 20 sessions of radiation which finished at the beginning of August. Try not to worry as our bodies have been subject to a lot of upheaval and it can take time for pain to subside. Sometimes it never goes away completely as witnessed by a previous serious operation.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to hear you are having a difficult time. It can take some time, often many months or longer, to fully recover from taxing breast cancer treatment. If superficial nerve endings have been affected by treatments, these can take a long time to improve. Every patient is different in their recovery journey.

You said that your specialist mentioned 2 areas of cording, and this can contribute to some discomfort, as it settles over time. If you have access to a breast care nurse still at the hospital, then maybe contact them for advice about this. Stretching exercises and massaging gently over the breast area can help. You could ask about a physiotherapy referral as they could do a new assessment for you. Breast Cancer Now have information about cording. Try and use a sports type firm support bra, without hard lines, as this can help with the discomfort.

Breast Cancer Now also have a support for you page which describes their 'someone like me' service, where women can be put in touch with others (trained volunteers), that have had breast cancer treatments.

    I hope this helps,

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
