Long wait

My 58 year old brother was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in September. He was told about 'the plan' to scan,  then keyhole, then chemotherapy, then remove the tumour. But it hasn't gone like that. After finding a suspicious element in his neck,  he was told by email that it's going to be another scan instead. This was done 2 weeks later,  then another 2 weeks to decide to have a biopsy. Then another 2 weeks to find that the biopsy was done incorrectly,  then another 2 weeks to be redone, then another 2 weeks for results. Meanwhile a week in hospital to have a feeding tube fitted. Now, he's been told that a stent is planned, then chemo and palliative care for a possible 12 month remaining life expectancy. There seems to be huge periods of time with no contact given, then the possibility of a change in plans to my brother's detriment.

My brother,  and the family,  are unable to prepare for any next stages, as there seems to be plans,  then periods of time elapses before anything positive happens. The waiting is the worst.  My brother just wants the tumour removed as per the first plan.  As his big sister, I'm not sure what to do.  Any guidance for myself to help my brother, his family, and our parents, would be a great help.  Many thanks

  • Hi Jule5612 and thank you for posting

I am sorry to learn of your brother's situation, this must be a worrying time for you all.

I am also sorry to learn that he is now having a stent inserted and will be having palliative chemotherapy and radiotherapy rather than surgery as previously thought. This must have been a shock and difficult to hear.

Not being involved in your brother's care makes it difficult to say why there have been delays and why the treatment plan has changed. When planning treatment the doctors look at several things such as the size of the tumour and how far it has spread (Stage), how fast-growing it is (grade) and how fit a person is whether or not they have other health conditions.

Sometimes diagnosing cancer isn't straightforward forward and getting all the right information from scans and biopsies can take time. The doctors must have all the information they need so they can plan the best way forward.

Your brother's case will also be discussed at the MDT (multidisciplinary team meeting) which consists of many different health professionals such as surgeons cancer specialists (oncologists) radiographers, and specialist nurses to discuss the treatment plan.

Unfortunately, if the cancer has spread beyond the primary site, it can be more difficult to treat and often surgery may not be an option. If your brother has a specialist nurse (CNS) who knows his situation he can speak with about why things have taken so long and why the treatment plan has changed to help clarify things, may be helpful.

Some people in this situation may consider a second opinion, this can help to confirm a situation. However, getting another opinion may delay treatment.

I hope this helps a little. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Take care

    Jemma
