nerve pain

My Husband is undergoing chemotherapy for bladder cancer and is having moderate to severe nerve pain . The pain is similar to sciatica pain he says. paracetamol, co codamal and ibrufen seem to have limited effect. We know he isn't supposed  to take  ibrufen with chemotherapy but he needs some pain relief. Any ideas Thanks

  • He needs to report this to his treating doctors. As for the pain, things like gabapentin and amitriptyline can help with nerve pain. However, they can come with their own side effects.

  • Thank you for advice. He is seeing his Doctor soon so he will discuss the pain with him, unfortunately side effects with medication seems common and a double edged sword.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Unfortunately, we can't give specific advice. His hospital team should be able to assess him regarding this and advise further. They may be able to prescribe medication to help. There are nerve agent type drugs used for nerve type pain, one is called Gabapentin. However, it is a drug that needs to be started at a low dose and increases slowly, as it has it's own side effects. If he is between hospital visits, then his GP should be able to advise on painkiller medications, that may need to be prescribed for him.

I hope that he gets help with this soon,
