Esophageal cancer

My Aunty was been diagnosed with esophageal cancer last Dec, she's been receiving treatment with chemotherapy then, immunotherapy and latterly radiotherapy on a lump that appeared on her neck. The day after her last treatment she was admitted to hospital. She's not in a good place now with her health, she has a box with her to help with the pain, with I am assuming is a morphine? The Dr's aren't forthcoming with info and its impossible to speak to the ward to gain updates on her. Ard you able to give a time frame on the info that I've given as to how long she will be with us?

Thank you in advance of your thoughts

  • Hello Mark and thank you for contacting us.

I am sorry to hear about your Auntie. This must be a difficult time for the whole family.

Unfortunately without being involved in your Aunt’s care, we cannot say how long she may have left. I am sorry that you feel in the dark about what is happening with your Aunt, but I would suggest you discuss this with her hospital team.

Maggies may be able to advise you on how best to approach the hospital team and  Macmillan has a webpage on what questions you may find helpful to ask.

It does however sound like she is very poorly so the time you can spend with her is important.

We have a section on our website called the last few weeks and days that you may find helpful to read.  It outlines some of the signs to look out for that people are getting closer to the end.

There is another page on  opioid pain relief which is what your Aunt may have in her box.

Right now, supporting her and taking care of yourself is important.

I hope reading this helps and you can speak to her hospital team soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina
