Lymphodoema

I had mastectomy and 21 lymph removed 20 years ago, followed by chemo and radio then hormone inhibitor tablet. I developed lymphodeoma 2 years on after treatment ended. I had treatment at lymphodoema clinic which included lymph massage and arm sleeve. Most  symptoms were stable until I fractured the the top of my arm 2 weeks ago. I cant have it plastered so have to keep in a sling for 6 weeks. My arm is really stiff and swollen now. Can you advise?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to hear about your fractured arm.

Unfortunately, we can't give you specific advice as this is an orthopaedic issue. You have to immobilize it in the sling for the bone to join back again.

Try and elevate your arm when you can, as in when sitting, as advised by the doctors. There will be swelling but elevation can help manage this. You will have to revisit your previous lymphoedema management when your shoulder is stable and healed.

I hope your recovery from the fracture goes well.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
