Cervical cancer

Hi my sister is 52 and was diagnosed 11months with stage 3 cervical cancer, she has a 10cm fungulated bulky tumor which is growing out,she has had chemo and radiation and unfortunately the tumor went from 9cm to 10cm, our mom also passed away 4 weeks ago and it really took it out of her,she wasn't eating and just still really unwell ...the doctors said they couldn't do the brachytherapy as the tumor grew...she is starting immunotherapy tomorrow and I'm just wondering if this helps? I don't think she can be cured just treated but what does that mean, she is very thin and hardly out of bed ,she is a single mom with 3 boys so i just want to know what her future looks like

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your sisters situation as well as the sad loss of your mom a few weeks back, this must be a difficult time for all of you.

Unfortunately when a cancer is at an advanced stage it is more difficult to treat and any treatment given is to try and control the cancer and any symptoms for as long as possible. The specialist doctors and nurses involved in your sisters care may be able to give a better idea about what the short and longer term may look like.

Cancers behave in different ways and it is difficult to predict how someone will respond to a treatment until the person goes through it. Hopefully the immunotherapy treatment will help to slow down the cancer to give your sister some more quality time with the family but only time will tell.

It is important that the doctors and nurses involved in your sisters care are aware of how she is and any symptoms she is experiencing so they can also advise and help her with these.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best

    Take care

    Naomi
