Throat cancer

Hi am caring for my uncle with throat cancer stage 4 he’s not keeping any food or drink down but refusing to go to hospital what shall I do ?

  • Hello Pauljohno

I'm afraid that our nurses are now out of the office until 9am tomorrow morning.

I'm sorry to hear that about your Uncle's diagnosis and the problems he's having. Please do call NHS 111 for advice and support if you are concerned about his condition overnight.

Our nurse team will respond to you as soon as they are able too.

    Best wishes,

  • It’s ok I spoke with a nurse

  • Hello,

I am sorry to hear of this difficult situation.

It does sound like he needs a home visit from his GP. This can be requested as urgent by ringing his GP surgery and explaining the situation. Another option is to ring NHS 111 but they may well suggest sending a paramedic around to assess. If not already in place, then it would be helpful for him to be referred to the local community palliative care team, who could do a home visit and assess him. They are experienced at managing difficult symptoms and can help with his sickness and other issues. His GP would need to make the referral to the community palliative care team.

In the meantime, sipping fluids in small amounts often can help.

    I hope this helps,

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Vanda
