Insomnia with mesothelioma

Good afternoon,

Just a message asking on how to cope with insomnia with a mesothelioma diagnosis. My father was told all his treatment has been stopped and ever since this regardless of the many sleeping medication he has tried, he still is active in a delirious manner during the night. Come morning time he seems to still have energy and we the carers are totally exhausted. I suppose I just want to know if this is typical behaviour and symptoms of this type of cancer. Thanks

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I can appreciate your concern. Disruption or disturbed sleep is not uncommon. The obvious suggestions to try of course include, not having alcohol or caffeine after mid afternoon, trying a milky drink instead before bed. Listening to radio or music can help induce deeper less fitful sleep.

It might be worth re looking at different medication that might help. An actual low dose sedative rather than sleeping tablets might help.

If not already under the care of a community palliative care team, then a referral from their GP to this team would be helpful. They have experience in managing difficult symptoms and can help.

The UK charity Mesothelioma UK  have specialist mesothelioma nurses that may have other suggestions too.

    I hope this helps,

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Vanda
