Re FNA results

I had my appointment this morning the results came back inconclusive again

my choices are have a repeat scan in 3month

have partial removal of thyroid but because I have had 2 previous surgeries there is a lot of scar tissue and damage to

a nerve could happen affecting vocal chords and swallowing

he said my other two surgeries the nodules were benign so probably these are but it’s a grey area with inconclusive results he couldn’t definitely

say . The consultant was very nice .
I said I would wait for repeat scan

but he said if when I got home and had a think about it and decide I want the surgery to call his secretary .

  • Hello avemaria and thanks for your post,

What a difficult decision to make. I don't think there is any right or wrong answer but what you feel comfortable with.

You may find it useful to discuss it with your GP and get their take on it. They will have received all the correspondence from the hospital about the inconclusive biopsies and it may be useful to have this discussion with someone who has access to your details.

There is some information on the British Thyroid Foundation  about this subject.

This is what they say in their information. ' About 19 out of 20 thyroid lumps are benign (not cancer). In some cases the biopsy will show  there is thyroid cancer present. Unfortunately, sometimes the biopsy does not give a clear answer. In such cases the biopsy may have to be repeated or additional tests may be requested. In some cases the only way of knowing whether a thyroid lump contains cancer cells is to remove part of the thyroid gland by an operation.'

If you would like to talk any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call.   The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
