Chemo and Dogs!

Hello!

Hope your having a lovely day.

Im due to start preventative chemo for BC this Thursday (yup on Halloween of all days!).

Im doing dose dense EC x 4 every 2 weeks followed by Taxol x 4 every two weeks.

What I was wondering is if its safe being near your dogs during chemo? I have three schnauzers who love a cuddle (as do I!) and they think nothing of jumping up on me. I know the immune system is very compromised during chemo so was wondering if and what precautions I should take.
Also have an overnight trip Id paid for ages ago to Harry Potter Studios in December.. hoping I can mask up and antibac myself silly and still go. Has anyone done a little day trip during chemo or am I being stupid?

Thank you xx

  • Hi, yes it’s absolutely fine to have your dogs near you during chemo, lots of cuddles will help you, mine never left my side as usual, I also had little weekends away when I felt up to it, just be more careful as your immune system will be low.. enjoy .. jm

  • Hello and thanks for posting

Having close contact with domestic pets during chemotherapy treatment will probably depend on how likely your immunity is to be temporarily reduced, and chemotherapy side effects can vary from person to person.  I think to be on the safe side, the best thing would be to ask your specialist team  or breast care nurse who knows all about you.

Good hygiene for example thorough hand washing and looking after the health of your dogs are what is usually suggested.  A US cancer charity has general information on its website about the sort of precautions to take with pets while on treatment.

You don’t need to avoid crowded places unless specifically advised to do so by your healthcare team.

Sometimes chemotherapy can make you feel off-colour for a few days and tired generally for longer. Often you have to see how things go and be prepared to adapt.

I hope this is of some help. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
