Chest tumour

Had the camera down ( endoscopy) last week. They found a chest tumour, took biopsies which we are waiting on results . Myself and my family are to meet the hospitals cancer team  this coming Friday. I know this is very very serious. Any advice on the subject would be most welcome. Friday for me is a life time, you can’t help thinking about it and the possible consequences.

many many thanks.

  • Hello Hopefull67 and thanks for your post,

I can understand what an anxious time this must be for you and your family.

The doctors normally organise a selection of tests, scans and biopsies to try and get a complete picture of the tumour. This is then discussed in an MDT (Multi disciplinary Team). At this meeting all the doctors involved in your care discuss in detail all the different tests that you have had to work out how the tumour should be treated.

The pathologist can tell a lot by the biopsies such as where the tumour  started, the type of tumour and how fast it is growing.

The doctors will assess your general health and work out the best possible ways to treat the tumour. At this stage it is difficult to say more until they tell you what they have discovered.

They may be meeting you next Friday after they have had this meeting. Sometimes the doctors decide that you may need further scans if they need more information.

Keep an open mind don't be afraid to ask questions so you have a full understanding about what it all means and what will be involved. Do bring a member of the family with you as there is usually so much information to take on board.

Ask the doctors how the tumour will be treated, when the treatment will start, any possible side effects and how the tumour will be monitored.

If you would like to talk any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then do give us a ring.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
