Smear result confusion

Hi. I'm 41. Just received my smear results in the post,  HPV negative. I was happy but today I also got a letter from my GP saying I need a repeat test in a year. I'm worried why this is?

The nurse did find a cervical polyp when I had my smear, could that be it? I'm really worried why I need a repeat test in a year when I had normal, negative results.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am afraid that I do not know why you have been asked to be re-screened in a year. According to the screening protocol, you are only invited back by the screening programme in a year if you are HPV positive and have a positive cytology (the cells that were looked at).

However, you say you have been invited back by your GP, therefore this might be to check the polyp that was seen.

It might be helpful to go back and ask the surgery practice nurse or GP about this, perhaps making an appointment to see/speak with her.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
