Laryngeal Cancer

My 88 year old mother was just recently diagnosed with Laryngeal Cancer.

The only symptom she has is a hoarse voice, the consultant is sending her for a CT scan.

I noticed that the scan has to include her chest, is that common to include the chest?

What type of surgery could she be offered, especially if it's not advanced?

Thanks

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your mum's diagnosis. This must be a difficult time for you all.

It is common for the CT scan to include your mum's chest as well as her throat. This is to ensure that the doctors have a clear, thorough view of the area around her larynx, as well as her lungs and lymph nodes to understand whether the cancer is localised or has spread. This will help them decide on the best treatment options.

After a cancer diagnosis patients are discussed within a MDT ( Multi Disciplinary Team) where all the specialists come together to decide the best treatment plan for each individual patient. The decisions are based upon the type and stage ( size and extent) of cancer and how fit and well they are and if they have any other health conditions that may affect their treatment.

You can read more how laryngeal cancer may be treated on our website. It includes information on the types of surgery that may be considered. Your mum's test results and general health will help her specialist decide if surgery is an option for her.

I hope this is of some help. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over with one of the nurses  on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
