Prostate cancer

Hi everyone.

Am a 61 year old male and 6 months ago I was diagnosed with a prostate cancer on my right side with no signs of metastasis.

Have been under hormotherapie since beginning of May and during July I had 20 sessions of radiotherapy treatment.

Am currently having a break from hormotherapie because of the side effects.

I would like to ask how long does the radiotherapy stays in your body after the treatment and also how long does the hormones keep effecting you if you stop taking them.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Stathis and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn that have needed treatment for prostate cancer.

Everybody's response to treatment is different. The radiotherapy can continue working for weeks possibly longer after treatment has finished, and the side effects could last for a few months or some side effects can last longer.

When you stop the hormone treatment, the testosterone levels will start to rise and the side effects will reduce but this does not happen straight away and can take several months.

You may find it helpful to discuss this with your nurse specialist (CNS) as they know your situation.

I hope this helps a little. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Jemma
