Immune system

Hi i have couple questions if that’s ok, is my immune system compromised when receiving radiotherapy for lung cancer. Is it usual to get headaches during my course of radiotherapy. My friends have asked me to go out I’m wondering if it’s safe to have alcohol during my treatment.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear you are currently undergoing treatment for lung cancer.

Generally speaking receiving radiotherapy on it's own to the lung doesn't affect a persons immune system. You can read about the possible side effects of lung cancer radiotherapy on our web pages, but just because they are listed doesn't mean every person will experience all of these. As you will see headaches aren't a known side effect of lung radiation.

If you are feeling up to going out with your friends whilst having treatment then this shouldn't be a problem but do take it easy and don't push yourself if you aren't up to it. It is okay to have small amounts of alcohol whilst having radiotherapy but do be aware if you are already feeling tired or fatigued ( a common side effect) alcohol may make this worse or cause you to feel drowsy. We have another section of info about eating and drinking during radiotherapy so do take a look and listen to your body. Remember what is right for you may look different to someone else.

I hope this is helpful, please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you for your help I also have sjorgrens  syndrome and was wondering if the treatment will further affect my immune system

  • Hello and thank you for getting back to us.

As my colleague has said radiotherapy does not usually cause problems with the immune system. But as cancer nurses, it is difficult to comment on how your other diagnosis will be affected. Do speak to your specialists in both your cancer and your Sjorgens syndrome to find out more.
