Liver cancer

My dad has been diagnosed with cysts on his liver one grade 3 one grade 5 , he also has cirrhosis of the liver and has been advised there is no treatment for this , why isn’t he being offered chemotherapy or radiotherapy? He’s been told to get his affairs in order so what does this mean time wise? Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I can appreciate your concern about your Dad.

Liver cirrhosis is very serious, and does indicate that the liver function is affected. It can mean an increased risk of bleeding. The British Liver Trust has information on cirrhosis which explains this in more detail. This can mean that chemotherapy (which passes through the liver), could cause very serious complications with the liver. I can't comment on the cysts in detail. It does depend on where they are, such as if they are deep in the liver tissue, or near the main hepatic artery for example. As this would mean that any intervention would not be straightforward. Targeted Radiotherapy can only be given to small localised areas of the liver, and again would not be possible if there was significant liver cirrhosis.

Unfortunately, I can't comment on what your Dad's outlook (prognosis) might be, as his specialist is the person best placed to answer specific questions about his case. Maybe you can talk with them, if your Dad gives his consent for his case to be discussed.

    I hope this reply helps,
