Adenocarcinoma of the appendix

My partner heard from his McMillan nurse after the mdt meeting.  They found cancer in his appendix that was removed in August. He's to have surgery to remove part of the right side of his colon. He didn't ask the questions I would have asked. Firstly I'd like to know will they take away the entire right side of his colon, will he need a stoma how long is he likely to be in hospital.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I can appreciate that you would have specific questions. Unfortunately, we won't be able to tell you what the treatment plan involves as such, as that needs to come from his hospital team. There may be a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) within the bowel surgery team who can be contacted.

We can signpost you to information about bowel cancer surgery that you may find useful though.

The UK charity Bowel Cancer UK has a website section on surgery . It covers types of surgery, and recovery afterwards.

I hope it all goes well,

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Yours sincerely,

    Vanda
