Understanding blood tests

I’ve been having a few blood tests recently as I have fatigue, slightly breathless and feeling full quickly.
Anyway, blood test showed very low folic acid (2.0 ug/L) and very high iron levels (311 ug/L)

It seems a strange combination and can’t find much information on having both.

Any insight would be appreciated.

  • Hello Daisydoo and thanks for your post,

I don't think that you will be able to find the reason for your abnormal blood tests by looking at google. When a patient presents with abnormal results the GP will probably go on to organise further tests to try and find out more.

They may well repeat these blood tests and organise other blood tests and perhaps an x-ray to find the cause of your breathlessness.

I can understand the frustration at not knowing but try not to over think it for now.

Don't be afraid to ask your GP  questions as to why various tests are being done.

If you want to ring and chat any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
