Influenza A

My husband spent 5 days in hospital being treated for flu (pneumonia) with antibiotics and an anti viral. He has stage 4 advanced prostate cancer and due to poor blood levels (low platelets as a result of his flu probably) we have had to delay his radiation treatment. His cough however is no better and he can have bouts lasting up to an hour and as he has extreme fatigue it is exhausting for him. He has a small lesion in his lung disguised 6 months ago, do you think this could be causing the cough or would it be too early for that to be a problem?

  • Hello AliMW and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your husband I can understand what a worrying time this must be for you.

It is difficult for us to give an opinion about the cause of his continuous cough as we are not involved in his care. It could still be a result of the flu which may be exacerbated by the lesion on his lung but it is probably best to get the opinion of the doctors involved in his care.

I can understand how frustrating it must be waiting for his radiation treatment to start but it is important that he is well enough to receive it.

I do hope that his cough gets better soon.

You and your husband are welcome to ring and chat through any of this with one of the helpline nurses.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
