Laryngeal Cancer

Hi

My mum is palliative care for laryngeal cancer. Her breathing is becoming laboured and she is having coughing fits that can go on for some time, occasionally ending up making her vomit.

My question is what will happen if the tumour is growning and starts to block her airway? Is that something that could realistically happen and if it is, how would it be treated?

Nobody appears to be telling us anything and I have no idea what to expect as she starts to become unwell. She’s been a little fighter and fought so hard, but I feel like she’s getting tired now and I feel like if I know what to expect I’ll be able to handle it better and care for her in the best way possible.

I’d be grateful for any advice.

Thank you.

  • Hi there mephisbelle and thanks for the post

I am very sorry to hear about your mum's situation and appreciate what a difficult time this must be for you both.

It is really important you speak with the specialist team involved in your mum's care about the changes in symptoms she is having. They are best to assess her and to make sure both you and your mum are getting the support needed at this time.

Depending on the position and size of the tumour this can affect the symptoms a person may experience. The doctors and nurses involved in your mum's care will be in a better position to advise on what you should expect and what they can do to best manage any symptoms your mum has along the way.

You need to talk through any concerns you have with the staff involved, be that community nurses or the palliative care team who are hopefully involved in mum's care. If she doesn't have any of this you need to ask the GP to assess your mum and refer on to any relevant services to get involved in her care.

We have a section of information about what to expect in the final days so do take a look at this.

I hope this is helpful. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
