Bowel cancer

Good afternoon

For the past few weeks I've been having the symptoms of bowel cancer apart from weight loss.

I saw my GP and had blood tests and a FIT test

My full blood count came back as slightly high and I've been told to repeat my bloods in 7 to 10 days.

The FIT test showed 10. I didn't get any further advice, my GP surgery also texted me about repeating the blood test but said nothing about the FIT test.

I'm so worried

Can anyone advise please?

Thank you

  • Hello Denise48 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are worried about your health and I can understand that worrying symptoms can cause a lot of stress.

It is difficult to be able to say very much as we are not involved in your care but your GP is repeating your blood tests in a week to 10 days. As your FIT test was not significantly high that was the reason the doctor did not refer to it.

I am sure that your GP will be taking your symptoms seriously but do remember that there are other causes for bowel symptoms to occur other then cancer.

We have a page on our website about the different tests that are sometimes arranged.

The Patients Association has written some information about getting the best out of your GP appointment which you may find helpful to go through.

You may well be referred for a colonoscopy if your symptoms persist but the GP needs to get as much information as they can beforehand to work out if this is the most appropriate test.

If you would like to chat any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
