Oral Thrush

Hi

My husband has recently had his first round of chemotherapy for lung cancer.  Within 24 hours he started to develop oral thrush.  We received some anti fungal medication and mouthwashes from the hospital to treat it.  However it is very severe and he has not been able to eat anything now for six days.  He is able to drink water but trying to eat anything other than ice lolly is proving impossible.  My husband thinks his throat feels a little easier today but he is still unable to swallow food.   I am worried that he is not eating.  He was checked at the hospital yesterday but we were hoping things would have improved by now.  Do you have any advice for us please?

  • Hi there copperknob and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your husband and the issues he is having with his mouth.

Unfortunately as the cells in the mouth turn over very quickly, this is often an area of the body that is affected quite quickly by chemotherapy. You have done the right thing by speaking with the hospital team and getting some mouthwashes and anti fungal treatment which should help.

As you say drinking plenty of water and fluids will help alongside trying to maintain good teeth and mouth hygiene. We have some more information about mouth problems on our webpages, so do take a look.

Often soft foods can be swallowed much easily, so do encourage him to try something at regular intervals and see how this goes. My experience is that the longer time passes without someone eating ( for whatever reason) there can be a fear or reluctance to want to try in case it is painful or causes another unpleasant reaction, so it can take some persuading.

Of course if this continues do get back in touch with the chemotherapy unit or his specialist nurse to discuss a plan.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Hi there

My husband has mouth “shredding” problems with his chemo and has been given Benzydamine mouthwash which works well plus Nysran drops and Gel clair- which combined have really helped him.

He also has thrush a couple of months ago and the oncology consultant gave him a weeks course of tablets ( sorry I can’t remember what their name was) but that knocked it on the head.

Hope you get the help you need.
