Secondary brain cancer

Hi my 83 year old mum was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 years ago (she also had it in her 50s) last year it spread to her lungs and yesterday we discovered it has also spread to her brain. She is i hospital because she was having severe headaches and being sick constantly. She was having chemo tablets so at the weekend we thought it was related to that and started her on anti sickness medicati but it just got worse so we took her to hospital where they did the scan and made the discovery. She is comfortable now and the symptoms are under control and she’s talking and has eaten something day which is great. We are waiting for the different teams to meet and discuss plans etc. my mum was already considering not continuing with Chemo because it was making her ill so if she decides now ot to have any treatment if offered on the brain cancer as a family we just need to know approximately how long she might have left so we can make it as special as possible for her. Will she be here or Xmas? Will she be able to see family that are coming from the other side of the world in January or does that need to be brought forward? I know no one can give a definite answer but just an idea ould be really helpful to our family. Thank you

  • Hello Blake9420 and thanks for your post,

I am very sorry to hear about your situation. This must be a difficult time for your family.

Prognosis (outlook) is a difficult thing to predict and probably a subject best discussed with your mum's doctors. The doctors may be looking at weeks rather then months but they are in a better position to assess her and tell you more. Even her doctors don't like to give an accurate time frame in case someone lives either longer or for a shorter time.

It does sound like they have got her symptoms under control which is good to hear.

It would be good to find out what help and support you can get for your mum when she goes home. With your mum's permission you could contact her GP to see what support she could get at home. Your mum may for example be able to get an OT (occupational therapist ) to assess what she may be able to get to adapt her home to make life more comfortable.

There is some information on our website practical support. that your mum may be able to access at home.

Do explain to her doctors that you have got family living far away and get their advice on whether they should travel over at an earlier date.

If you would like to talk any of this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to give us a call. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
