Terminal GIST

After 5 years of taking Imatinib for a resected GIST cancer in my stomach with liver metastases I have now been told the GIST has relapsed and I have about 6 inoperable lesions on my liver

I'm now on the sunitinib and regrafonib pathway. I asked my oncologists what my life expectancy is likely to be.  Although they won't be pinned down they have indicated that the median progression free period for each is 6 and 3 months respectively.

I'm feeling rather numb about this and finding it difficult to know what I should doing and when to prepare for the end of my life and what I should be planning. I don't want to die at home but want to go into a hospice but don't know how I get this sorted out.

Are there any support networks that can help with this and can help talk me through dealing with this news?

  • Hi Mike59  and thank you for your post,

I am so sorry to learn of your situation, this must be a difficult time for you with a lot of uncertainty.

Chatting with your specialist or nurse specialist (CNS) if you have one, or perhaps your GP, about being referred to the palliative care team for support is worthwhile.  They are experts in managing symptoms such as pain, but also can offer emotional support to you and your family. You can be referred to the community palliative care team in your area who are often attached to the local hospice, so do talk to your hospital doctor or GP if this hasn't already happened.

The palliative care team in your area will be good at supporting people with making plans about their future care. This is called advanced care planning and I can see from your enquiry you talk about wanting to die in a hospice. You may not be ready to read all this information, and it may be difficult to read, but we do have information on our website about making plans before you die which looks at this. There is also information about advance care planning on the Macmillan Cancer Support.

On the Macmillan Cancer Support website, there is information about care and support available if you have advanced cancer and do talk to you hospital team about any other local services available to you to help you through this time.

If you would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline then you would be welcome to give us a call. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

I hope this helps a little. Take care,

    Jemma
