Bowel cancer

Hi  , my mum has just been diagnosed with bowel cancer.  She needs to have chemotherapy then a operation. My mum is 80 Yr old how will she cope with the chemotherapy given ?

Also is they any help for her/us to take her to and from the hospital?

It's all new for us

Thanks

Craig

  • Hi Craig thank you for posting

I am sorry to learn of your mum's situation, this must be a difficult time.

When planning treatment there are several things the doctors will consider, how big the cancer is and how far it has spread (stage), a person's age, and how fit they are whether or not they have other health conditions.

The doctors will also weigh whether the possible side effects outweigh the benefits of treatment. So if they are offering your mum chemo it sounds like they feel she will manage, she can stop the treatment at any time if she cannot tolerate it.

I don't know what hospital your mum is being treated at, but she could check with her specialist nurse (CNS) if hospital transport would be available to her. For your information, Macmillan Cancer Support has financial guides she could speak with to see if she is entitled to any financial benefits. They also offer grants to people with cancer to help with any extra costs.

It is also worth looking at the Cancer Care Map website which will help guide you on what cancer support services may be available in your mum's local area.

I hope this information is useful, please feel free to get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Jemma
