Colonoscopy

Hi

I Have been invited for a colposcopy within 3 weeks of my smear results. The quickness of the appointment has terrified me

last July I had HPV with no abnormalities. Fast forward a year, my recent smear results received end of sept show HPV with abnormalities, I’m terrified I’m in my forties, and my mum passed away with cervical cancer in her forties . My colposcopy is next week

does receiving the colposcopy appointment so quickly mean bad news? Over the last few days I’ve started to get vaginal dryness and a sore back. Is this related ?

please any advice would be appreciated I’m so scared

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your situation, and that your mum sadly died of cervical cancer at a young age.

It is important to know that abnormal cells are not cancer. However if left untreated they may eventually turn into cancer, but this is something that can take a long time.

The aim of the cervical screening programme is not to look for cervical cancer but to look for HPV (human papillomavirus) which can cause abnormal cell changes. If the smear shows HPV then a further test is done to look for abnormal cells.  If abnormal cells are found then a referral is made to have a colposcopy.

A colposcopy is a test that takes a closer look at the cervix. A sample of the abnormal cells can be taken (biopsy) which will tell the doctor how abnormal the cells are and if further treatment is needed. It is very rare to find cancer cells during the procedure.

It is good that you have had an appointment arranged in such a short time, as it can take up to 8 weeks. Try not to overthink this as it does not mean it is bad news at all, it could just be there were appointments available at this time.

Having HPV and abnormal cells do not cause symptoms. The symptoms you are describing are likely to be caused by other reasons such as hormonal changes.

I hope this helps a little. Please feel free to get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

I hope the colposcopy goes well

    Yours sincerely,

    Jemma
