Headaches, fatigue and sore limbs

Hi, having been diagnosed with Papillary Cancer after a complete Thyroidectomy. Prior to operation I was tired and suffered throat & neck pain. After surgery and on discharge I was given blood thinners and my headaches stopped. After five days my blood thinners stopped and my headaches returned followed by sore limbs especially at my knees and calf,s. This then gave tummy ache and feeling nausea and short of breath. This comes and goes and is not constant but my walking is curtailed a lot as I can only manage 300 yards and my light head, headache starts my muscles over my body. Over the last three days my throat has gotten sore and my cough has returned but is more chest orginated. I have been taken my thyroid meds at 125grms and calcium pills. I await my cancer team 15th Oct going over my future treatment and my meds will be done on 31st by ENT. Why is my post op and recovery taken so long for recovery I thought a few weeks.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis of thyroid cancer and that following surgery you have been unwell.

I am afraid that it's not possible to know why you have these symptoms but you have an appointment tomorrow so hopefully, this is something you can discuss with your doctor.

I think it is fair to say that we will all respond differently to surgery and treatment, in particular to how long it will take to feel better.  It is important to let your cancer team know how you are because there may be something they can do about it.

I hope the appointment goes well. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
