For a germ cell tumour, do you need any treatment after radiotherapy?

I have a germ cell tumour and they removed it from my brain and they checked my tumour under microscope and they said there’s no cancer left but we still wanna complete treatment just so it doesn’t come back but the question I have is for a germ cell tumour do u need any treatment after radiotherapy

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Most tumours that affect the brain are treated with surgery, and then a course of radiotherapy, depending on the situation. Radiotherapy is a very effective treatment that can be given to very specific areas in a targeted way.

Germ cell tumours that start off in the brain, called intracranial germ cell tumours, are usually treated with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. There is information about this on the Brain Tumour charity website

Germ cell tumours that originate elsewhere in the body, such as the ovaries or the testicles, and have then travelled to the brain, are often treated with surgery. If all of the tumour has been removed, then no further treatment is needed. Chemotherapy would be suggested if the tumour was large, or some cancer cells were left behind, such as a partial excision surgery.

Unfortunately, as nurses, we can't suggest treatments or provide a medical opinion. Hopefully your specialist or hospital clinical nurse specialist (CNS), may be able to explain this more for you.

    I hope this helps,

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
