CA-125 results

Hello and thank you in advance. A relative of mine has ovarian cancer and has chosen not to have any surgery or chemotherapy. She was diagnosed in May/June this year. Having had regular monthly CA-125 tests, why do they fluctuate? The initial reading was 559, followed by 311, then 432, 925 and just today 660. Between the first and second reading she had an ascites drainage of 200ml which may explain the fluctuation there but the recent ones do not make sense. Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your relative. This must be a difficult time for you all.

CA125 levels can fluctuate for a number of reasons. Sometimes the tumour itself can release varying amounts of CA125 at different times. They can also fluctuate due to inflammation or ascites. However, even without ascitic drainage fluctuations can occur due to changes in the body's response to the cancer.

There is also a chance that slight differences in how the tests are processed in the laboratory can cause small changes in the CA125 results, and we don't really know why this is.

However, doctors often look at trends of the CA125 levels over time rather than individual numbers. They will likely use these levels alongside other signs and symptoms your relative is experiencing to guide any further decisions about her care.

I hope this is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
