Lung cancer chemotherapy

Hi I'm looking after my friend at the moment. She had a top lobe removed back in February which was adocarcinoma. This September she had a tumour removed from her bottom lobe and found out it's small cell carcinoma. She has to start chemotherapy in 2 weeks time. 3 afternoons a week every 3 weeks for 4 months. And medication in between. I'm really worried as I have a holiday booked for the end of October and I just worried she won't be able to cope on her own as she is 72. Should I get someone in to look after her. It's All very scary of knowing what to do and how she will be after chemo. Is she allowed visitors? Is she allowed to see grandkids that are 9 and 7?

  • Hello Sjm4 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your friend. It is difficult to be able to advise you as I am not sure about the type of chemo your friend will be having and also about her general health.

I would encourage your friend to ask about the potential side effects of the treatment and seek her teams advice about being at home on her own.

Most chemotherapies are tolerated quite well. She will be given medication to help minimise any side effects. Your friend should also be given a chemotherapy helpline number so she can ring if she has any concerns.

I am sure that it would be fine for her grandkids to visit but it would be better if they were fit and well and did not have any coughs or colds.

We have some information on our website about preparing yourself for chemotherapy which you may find helpful to share with your friend.

If you or your friend would like to ring and chat this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to do so.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
