Worried about my mum. She's been told she has advanced melanoma cancer. As it has spread so quickly what can I expect?

My mum was told at first the cancer she had was lung and stomach, then at her appointment last week, it was confirmed it was melanoma cancer that has spread to her lungs and stomach. She was at the dentist on Thursday who was concerned and now it's spread to her mouth.  I live abroad and have seen her today for the first time in 6 weeks and can see a huge difference and how awful she looks.  As it has spread so quickly what should I expect, will any treatment work if it has spread so quickly? How should I prepare myself and my children? I just don't know how to be

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am so sorry to hear about your mum, this must be a difficult time for you.

Every patient and their cancer is different and therefore no one here can exactly say how your mum may respond to treatment or what may happen next.

It is really important to try and speak with the doctors and nurses involved in your mum's care to find out more. They are in a better position to explain the next steps and what they plan in terms of treatment, and what the future may look like.

Unfortunately, when a cancer spreads to other parts of the body any treatment given is to control the cancer rather than cure it but see what the team has to say.

The doctors should be able to speak with you if you go along with your mum to any appointments, or if your mum gives her permission for you to speak to them separately on your own.

I hope you know more soon but please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
