Am dreading having an operation to remove rectum which will involve a colostomy. Is it likely that the cancer could spread if I don’t have the operation

Hi Clotilde and thank you for posting,
I am sorry to learn of your situation, this must be a difficult time for you.
The best person to discuss this with would be your hospital team such as the specialist or the specialist nurse (CNS), as they know your situation, and would be able to discuss with you if any other treatment options might be available.
For some people, it can be helpful to ask for a second opinion as this can help clarify that you are being offered the right treatment or if there may be other options, however, this could delay treatment.
If you decide not to have treatment at all then it is likely at some point the cancer will spread. I can appreciate you are worried about the operation, so do talk to your team about your concerns about having a colostomy.
If you want to talk things through you may find it helpful to call one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
Take care,
Jemma
