Mobility/care needed post hysterectomy for womb cancer

How mobile and how much care is my mum likely to need post hysterectomy for womb cancer. Stage 1b. She is 80 and otherwise fit, she has dad but he is 81.

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

It is difficult to say exactly how Mum is going to be after her surgery for womb cancer as we are not part of her hospital team.

Some women after this type of surgery are back to normal function after a few weeks, others take longer. It is probably best to prepare for the fact that she will be able to do minimal at first and then whatever happens you are all prepared. Things like having easy meals at the ready that they can prepare and maybe having a rota of friends or family if possible that can pop in or call them.

If your mum supports your dad it may be good for his GP to be made aware that she will be recovering and will not manage as usual in case other arrangements need to be put in place. You could also chat with her specialist nurse (CNS) if you are concerned about them coping after her surgery, and whether she needs any support. If Mum permits for her health information to be shared you could even have a phone call or email with her doctor if it is difficult to attend appointments.

Macmillan has information on supporting someone with cancer which may be useful.

Please feel free to get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Sarah.
