Not 100% confirmed, but husband and I are suffering due to delays

Went for ultrasound following pain in right side in April ( all ok now)(. Colonoscopy after FIT test( all ok) CT scan as ultrasound showed something in left kidney not clear so MRI done. Consultant said 80% cancer and would be slow growing but surgery for keyhole partial nephrectomy or if necessary open surgery to remove whole kidney. Scheduled for August, then September and both cancelled due to staff holidays and shortages. Both myself and husband are suffering mentally because of delays, probably more than the possible cancer diagnosis.

  • Hello Roobob and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I can understand that when you prepare yourself for surgery and then it is cancelled it can be very stressful.

If you haven't got another date in the diary do ring the surgeons secretary to find out more.

If you are not able to get hold of the secretary you could contact your PALS department where you could ask them to investigate the delays on your behalf.

It may also be worth making an appointment and discussing your concerns with your GP. Let your GP know the effect that this is having on your mental health. I am not sure whether your family doctor will be able to also contact the hospital on your behalf.

I do hope that you find out more soon.

If you would like to talk any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • I have phoned and got new date for op on 15th October after 2 cancelled dates. Worried that pre up tests back in August will no longer be valid - cycle, ecg, breathing and bloods etc? I may phone again on Monday to check. Everything else on hold - copd and BP annual health review, dental check up and other stuff. Just so anxious and just want op done and see how I recover unless complications - aaargh!

  • Hi Roobob and thanks for getting back to us again.

I think it is a good idea trying to get hold of them to see if they need to redo the tests they did particularly as it is a while since you have had them done.

I do hope that the op goes on as planned and you know more soon.

Do get back to us if you would like to talk things through.

The nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm and our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine
