Breast cancer

I had got a call back from my mammogram. I went to the breast clinic and they said there was an area on my right breast which was suspicious I had a 3D mammogram and a ultra sound plus a biopsy I ask the sonographer was it cancer she just kept saying it’s suspicious I don’t get my results for 3 weeks from biopsy

  • Hello and thanks for posting

A mammogram can show up an area that the doctors are not sure about, but they can't confirm what it is as more information is needed before a result can be given. This often means a repeat mammogram  and further tests such as an ultrasound and a biopsy.

Most women who get a recall turn out not to have cancer. Also, women who have had their first breast screening are more likely to be recalled than those who are having subsequent mammograms. This is because, if there are any question marks there are no previous breast x-rays that the specialist can use to compare 'the problem area' with to look for changes.

Breast Cancer Now have information on their website about screening recall. This gives a little more detail about the points I have mentioned.

There is no way around having to wait for the outcome of the recall. Most people find waiting in a situation like this stressful. But hopefully you will know more soon.

Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
