Chemo v no chemo

I am a 49 yo single mother to a gorgeous 15 yo boy, I was recently diagnosed with CUP with poorly differentiated cells that has spread to both lungs. Prognosis is a year with treatment of Paclitaxel and Carboplatin or 6 months without.

My original dilemma was should I have a quality 6months without treatment or in and out hospital for 12 months of treatment with *** side effects. Which my son and I both agreed we didn't want the latter option. However.....

A friend who sadly is all too familiar with this bloody disease informs me that it won't be a quality 6 months as symptoms of secondary lung cancer such as pain, coughing and breathlessness will kick in. And it's the chemo they give to alleviate symptoms. So if that's the case should you just have the treatment anyway as its inevitable???????? Dilemma

  • hello Laurie08,

just reading your post and full of emotions, l do not know what l could say to you other than l can really feel your pain and sorrow. Bloody disease

  • Hello Laurie08 and thanks for the post

I am very sorry to hear about your situation and can't begin to imagine what a difficult time this must be for you and your son.

Decisions about treatment are never easy. Not knowing what the short and long term may look like for you makes this even harder to navigate and decide what is best for you.

I can understand quality of life being the most important thing to you at the moment. As you are aware cancer treatment can have side effects but how this affects one person will look completely different to someone else. Likewise cancer in itself can cause symptoms and again these will depend on the location of the tumour/s and as the cancer grows and spreads.

However the doctors and nurses involved in your care whatever you decide will be on hand to try and manage any side effects or symptoms you have along the way.

Do speak with your team about this again so that you can make an informed decision weighing everything up.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Hi Laurie,

That’s a dilemma that many of us are familiar with.
One thing worth bearing in mind is that any prognosis you’re given can never be accurate because they’re based on averages and none of us are average.

It would be worth posting a question on here about people’s experience with Paclitaxel and Carboplatin to get as much information as you can to help you make you make your decision.

    Good luck.
    Dave

  • Ohhh good idea thanks Dave x
