Staging for bony disease

Hi I hope you can help.

My mum has been diagnosed with ER/PR +ve HER2 -ve breast cancer with spread to nodes. I’m not sure if the nodes are micrometastasis or not but I do know the primary breast lump is 1cm and impalpable (picked up on screening mammo).

my questions is when will she be staged for bony disease? If the cancer is in her nodes then it could have spread to bone already even if a small primary so what can we expect in terms of further imaging to check for that?

many thanks

  • Hello daughter17 and thanks for your post,

I can understand how stressful it can be waiting to find out the results of tests and what it will mean for your mum. If her doctors are concerned that there may be a spread to the bones then they may organise a bone scan.

There is some information about the different tests that your mum may have before they decide what treatment she may need moving forward. We do have a page on our website about treatment decisions for breast cancer.

Every suspected cancer patient is discussed in a large meeting called an MDT where all the doctors involved in her care will discuss tests that she has had and whether further tests are needed to get a complete picture of her cancer and how it should be treated. There are so many tests that are now done on breast cancer patients and each case is treated very individually.

You may find it helpful and if your mum agrees for you to go to one of the appointments so you can understand more. Your mum will be given a breast cancer nurse who will be able to support your mum before ,during and after her treatment.

It can help to read through the various links and if you want to know more then do get back to us or give us a ring. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
