Radiotherapy side effects

Hi, I was just wondering what the side effects of radiotherapy for breast cancer are.

I've had lumpectomy and lymph node removal operations and preventative chemo, now having phesgo injections every 3 weeks and have just been told that radiotherapy will start soon.

I've just started feeling myself again after many months so I just want to know what I’m up against next please, just so I’m more prepared

thank you

  • Hello there Kerry 1978 and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are undergoing breast cancer treatment.

We have information about radiotherapy and its possible side effects on our About Cancer web pages so do take a look. Everyone is different with side effects but generally, the main ones people experience are tiredness, fatigue, and some skin irritation, redness, and swelling to the breast tissues.

I hope everything goes well for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care

  • Hi

ive just finished my 4 week radiotherapy sessions and am having the 3 weekly phesgo injections as well. Main side effects for me are redness of skin and rawness where my lymph nodes were removed. It’s now 6 days since the last session and am having pain in this area. I called the radiotherapy team and it can take up to 2 weeks for symptoms to occur.
    hope you are doing well.
