Understanding progression

I had Bowel Cancer Op in September 2023.  Had some chemo after as fit despite being old (76). Research said survival possibilities 75% at 5 years. First Annual CT scan showed spread to Liver. Possible treatment plan is 2 months aggressive chemo, surgery to remove, more chemo; high probability of survival, but research says 1 year survival at best for my age!

I have a wife of 55 years who has mobility problems and I have sold house (move early December) to locate wife with family for support as no one close to present home. I also need to get my affairs in order - my bad for planning on having 5 years!  I understand this is a 'how long is a piece of string' question, but no one will offer any advice or help on if stopping all treatment now and hoping to just get to the New Year to complete all the above domestic trivia might work?!

I'm mentally prepared for the inevitable, but leaving my wife in the lurch half way through relocation is my big worry.  Any thoughts on where I might get help?

Thanks.

  • Hi NigelB and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your situation. It sounds like you have a lot going on and there is a lot of uncertainty for you.

You may have done this already, but it is your team at the hospital who are best to speak with as they know your situation. I wondered if you have a nurse specialist (CNS) that you can talk to.

The problem with statistics is they are general and not talking about a person's situation. As you have mentioned it is difficult to know what a person's outcome may be and even the most experienced doctors cannot say with any certainty.

If you would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline, please feel free to give us a call. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Jemma
