Dad diagnosed with MPN

My dad has recently been diagnosed with MPN with a treatment plan of venesection and hydroxicarbamide. Unfortunately the doctor hasn’t explained it very well and has said it’s not cancer. But all the research I’m doing is telling me that it is a cancer.. I just want to know what’s actually happening but to be honest there’s not been much information given. I was on holiday when my dad was diagnosed and i can imagine he was overwhelmed and didn’t ask many questions. Does he have cancer?

  • Hi Moon_daughter and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn of dad’s situation. I can imagine this is a worrying time for all the family.

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) are classed by The World Health Organisation (WHO) as a form of blood cancer.

This is because the bone marrow is producing blood cells in an uncontrolled way. Treatment depends on what type of MPN your dad has.

Venesection and  Hydroxycarbamide  is a commonly used form of treatment.

MPN voice has more information on MPN  and a page on talking to your doctor which your dad might find helpful.

You may find it helpful to join the blood cancer charity online forum where you are more likely to find and chat with other people going through the same or similar situation.

    I hope reading this helps.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
