newly diagnosed mum

Hi, my mum was told on Monday she had stage 4 stomach and lung cancer from a previous skin cancer a few years back.  I currently live in Germany and need to get a flight back but my daughter has been ill and now i am full of a cold.  I no i shouldn't go until i am better but my mum wants me there.  Am i right staying away until i am better as i could make her poorly?

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am so sorry to hear about your mum.

It is a difficult situation to be in as of course, you don't want to give her your cold, but at the same time, if she is asking for you to come and see her, I am sure you want to be there for her.

Every patient's immune system is different and therefore if you know she has a lowered immune system (low white blood counts)  due to either treatment or the cancer itself it wouldn't be advised to visit until you are free from symptoms. If on the other hand, she is well and not about to start treatment anytime soon you could go and then try and keep your distance as much as possible or wear a face mask to protect her.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best

    Naomi
