New diagnosis

Good evening , my dad has been diagnosed with liver cancer today he has a lump in his groin that needs to be removed. I’m a nurse and I want to look after him the best way I can. He said he’s being referred to a specialist I feel clueless to the next stages and I just want to make it as relaxed for him as possible.

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am so sorry to hear about your dad, this must be a difficult time for you both.

We have some information about liver cancer on our website that may be helpful to read. However it sounds like your dad is still undergoing some more tests so hopefully once the results are in, you will know more about what is going on and needs to happen next.

It is understandable to want to support your dad through his journey and to try and make it as easy as possible for him. We also have a section about supporting someone with cancer, so do take a look at this also.

As I say once the doctors have all the information about your dads cancer they can sit down and discuss what this means and what treatment you dad will need moving forward. At this point there should be an opportunity to ask questions, so if you can attend the appointment with him it might be useful to hear the plan first hand.

Try and take things one step at a time for now and try not to let your thoughts run away with you until you have all the information.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Best wishes to you and your dad

    Naomi

  • Thank you for you response Naomi . My Dad is meeting the oncologist tomorrow he’s not sure what to expect? I’m going with him but only driving him there he doesn’t want me to go in with him which is so hard but I must respect his wishes x

  • My dad saw the oncologist today there’s tumours in his lungs and secondary cancer in his liver. They not sure where the primary is so they going a biopsy. Chemotherapy has been offered to shrink the tumours not cure him.

  • Hello and thank you for getting back to us.

I am sorry to hear about Dad, but good that they have a plan. Once they get the biopsy result they should get a clearer idea of what cancer is the primary. Then they will be able to decide on the type of chemotherapy that they use.

If you want to talk any of this through with the nurses on our helpline the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Sarah.
