  • Hello Worrier 2962 and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear you are undergoing investigations and appreciate what a worrying time this must be for you.

Unfortunately, when something abnormal is detected, a series of tests need to be carried out to give more information about what is going on. Of course this can be a very unsettling time for people and needing to wait for answers is never easy. Macmillan have some information on cancer tests and waiting for results on their website.

We suggest people take things step by step, day by day and to not over think things until they have all the facts and information about their situation. Kidney tumours can be benign (not cancerous) or cancerous. If and when kidney cancer is diagnosed there are different types and stage ( the size and extent of the cancer) and the treatment plan will depend on those factors.

As I say usually a series of tests are needed to rule in or out cancer, often involving scans and a possible kidney biopsy to confirm what cells make up the tumour. Surgery is common for larger tumours but it is important to check the location of the tumour in relation to major blood vessels before the doctors plan the next steps.

I really hope you know more soon and that everything is okay for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care
