Possible cancer

My mum has been unintentionally losing weight for some time. Finally she has seen her Gp . She only told us yesterday that she has had a chest xray and bloods and is seeing a consultant today. I’m so worried she may have lung cancer. She used to be a very heavy smoker and she now vapes instead . She has had two different cancers before plus a heart attack and stroke. She is 72. How long after a chest xray do you get a diagnosis.

  • Hello HO and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your mum. This must be a difficult time for you all.

Hopefully when your mum sees the consultant today she will have an idea about what they are investigating. Every situation is very different but the consultant may decide to do several tests before they confirm whether or not it is cancer.

You can see the list of potential tests for lung cancer that the consultant may organise.

Doctors review every suspected cancer patient in a large meeting called an MDT (Multi disciplinary Team) meeting. At this meeting all the doctors involved in her care review all the results.

I can't say how long this will all take but your mum may have an idea after her appointment today.

If you or your mum would find it helpful to ring one of the information nurses then you are welcome to do so. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
